Axioma Servisas company, which provides its services mainly to industrial sector, has added another service to its rather abundant basket. As of October of this year, metrological inspection of breathalyzers will be carried out in the laboratory in Vilnius, which will determine whether the device functions accurately and conforms to the tolerances declared by the manufacturer.
Breathalyzers are used not only by traffic police officers
Today, alcohol meters, otherwise known as breathalyzers, are used by many companies, from trade and service to the manufacturing sector. In modern companies, the control of undue intoxication among employees is extremely strict, and checks are carried out with the help of specific measuring devices – breathalyzers.
The sensor integrated in the breathalyzer works on an electrochemical principle. The sensor reacts to alcohol vapours of the respective concentration and emits a voltage measured in millivolts, which the device converts into readings of alcohol concentration, or per mille. This sensor is very sensitive, therefore, it needs to be checked periodically to obtain accurate data, i.e., perform a metrological inspection every 6 months.
How is the breathalyzer inspection carried out?
Certified standard solutions are used to assess the compliance of breathalyzers with the specified requirements. With the help of calibrators, they are heated to the temperature of the air exhaled by a person – 34 degrees.
The breathalyzer being tested is connected to the calibrator; the vapours of the standard solution of the corresponding concentration are blown into the device. The breathalyzer readings are then compared with the concentration of the standard solution. The procedure is performed with solutions of different concentrations in the entire measurement range of the device.
Metrological inspection is carried out in the laboratory in Vilnius
In the Axioma Servisas laboratory, metrological inspections will be possible for all alcohol concentration meters (breathalyzers) that are included in the Lithuanian State Register of Measuring Instruments.
Moreover, the laboratory, as a designated institution, will be able to evaluate the documentation of measuring instruments – check the conformity of the metrological characteristics of the measuring instrument and the possibilities of performing the verification of the measuring instrument in Lithuania according to the applicable verification methodologies, and prepare the necessary documents for the approval of the type of new measuring instruments and include it in the Lithuanian State Register of Measuring Instruments.
After the metrological inspection, the specialists of Axioma Servisas will issue a certificate and an inspection mark, which is affixed to the breathalyzer that meets the established requirements.
