The largest BESS park has opened in the Panevėžys district

On April 17, coinciding with Lithuanian Energy Workers’ Day, the country’s largest private battery energy storage system (BESS) park, “Aruno BESS,” was inaugurated; its construction was carried out by the “Axioma Serviso” team.

Located in the village of Bliūdžiai in the Panevėžys district, the storage park stands out for its scale—its installed capacity reaches 93 MW, and its storage capacity is 186 MWh. This is the largest energy storage system concentrated in a single location in Lithuania.

The opening ceremony was attended by Alvydas Sakavičius, advisor to the Minister of Energy, as well as representatives from the Energy Regulatory Council, ILTE, and Litgrid. Also present were Artūras Lopeta, CEO of Axioma Servisas; Tomas Gerdauskas, head of the Vilnius service branch; and project managers Marius Šepronas and Paulius Stonkus.

Turnkey Construction of the Park

Axioma Servisas built this energy storage park on a turnkey basis—from site preparation and equipment supply to system integration and final commissioning.

The project was implemented on a 2-hectare site equipped with all necessary infrastructure—utility and communication networks, a substation, energy storage units with inverters and distribution equipment, and a control system.

The project placed special emphasis on safety: modern fire prevention systems, autonomous detectors, and automatic fire suppression technologies were installed to ensure a rapid response to any incidents.

The new infrastructure will enable effective balancing of the power grid: during periods of excess generation, energy will be stored, and when consumption increases, it will be fed back into the grid.

A strategically important project

According to Edvardas Norkeliūnas, director of Aruno BESS, such solutions are becoming essential as the entire European energy system undergoes transformation.

“After Lithuania disconnected from the BRELL power ring, there was a significant need in the region for flexible, fast, and effective power grid balancing solutions. Energy storage parks are one of the most advanced ways to ensure system stability, especially as renewable energy generation grows. Such projects not only help balance the grid but also increase competition in the system services market,” said E. Norkeliūnas.

The total value of the project exceeds 40 million euros.
