Successful repair of Gren Klaipėda multi-stage centrifugal pump

For more than 20 years, the Axioma Servisas team has been taking care of the technological equipment of Lithuanian industrial companies. Every year, the Pump and Rotary Equipment Repair Department refurbishes around 1,000 different types of rotary equipment, including industrial pumps, reducers, air blowers, etc.

One of the repair projects successfully completed this year was the comprehensive renovation of a multi-stage centrifugal pump for the energy company Gren Klaipėda.

The equipment was diagnosed last summer

The Klaipėda-based thermal power plant, which produces heat and electricity, uses two specific industrial pumps. One of them, a Sulzer multi-stage centrifugal pump, supplies feed water to the steam boiler. This pump is one of the critical pieces of equipment at the power plant. After 50,000 operating hours, in order to ensure the reliability of the equipment, the customer decided to carry out a major overhaul of the pump, as required by the equipment manufacturer.

Qualified specialists from Axioma Servisas performed a detailed diagnosis of the multi-stage centrifugal pump and determined what repairs needed to be carried out and which components needed to be replaced in order for the pump, which is vital to the power plant, to continue to operate as reliably as it had until now.

Actual repair work began in early 2025

After dismantling the multi-stage centrifugal pump, the bearings, fan, pressure balancing disc, bushing, shaft, and impeller were replaced. This was followed by restoration of the friction surfaces of the dynamic part of the mechanical seals, sealing of the bushings, and grinding and cleaning of the rear surfaces. Once all the refurbishment work was complete, the Sulzer pump was reassembled and tested using a hydraulic test.

The repair project took almost two months. “We only received the necessary spare parts in January this year. On the other hand, repairs of this type usually take between 6 and 12 months,” explains Povilas Valiūnas, Head of the Pump and Rotary Equipment Repair Group.

Special equipment was manufactured

Special equipment was ordered for the repair of an industrial pump weighing almost two tons.

“This was the biggest challenge of the project. We had to manufacture equipment that would allow us to turn and secure the huge pump. Another device was manufactured to push the rotor,” says P. Valiūnas.

The contract signed with Gren Klaipėda was worth more than 60 thousands.

About the client

UAB Gren Klaipėda generates heat and electricity using sorted municipal and industrial waste that is no longer suitable for recycling. The thermal power plant in Klaipėda processes up to 279,000 tons of waste annually. Operating since 2013, it was the first power plant of its kind in Lithuania and the Baltic States. Its thermal capacity is 85 MW, and its electricity generation capacity is 20 MW.
