Axioma servisas, an engineering service provider, will implement ambitious battery energy storage system (BESS) park construction projects, with two contracts signed in Lithuania in late 2024.
The BESS parks under construction will play an important role in ensuring the stability of the electricity grid across the country, reducing price volatility and promoting the development of renewable energy. One park will have a power of 60 MW and capacity 120 MWh, while the other will have – 80 MW and 160 MWh respectively.
“These are among the largest battery parks of this type in Lithuania. They will be connected to Litgrid’s electricity transmission grid and will contribute to the sustainable development of Lithuania’s electricity system and energy independence,” said Tomas Gerdauskas, Head of Vilnius Service Unit, about the importance of the projects.
BESS parks – what are they?
In today’s energy sector, more and more electricity is generated from renewable sources, i.e. solar and wind, which are not constant. In order to ensure a reliable and stable energy supply, there is a need for battery parks. These parks store, balance and distribute electricity according to the demand at the time.
Full installation of BESS parks
Axioma servisas has undertaken the full installation of two BESS parks. The project team is responsible for site preparation, equipment supply and installation, full system integration, testing and commissioning. The company will also take care of the maintenance and service of the BESS parks after installation.
Both projects will be implemented in parallel, with the design and equipment selection already started, and the final tuning and commissioning of the systems planned for the third quarter of next year.
Both projects are worth more than 70 million.
Equipment for BESS parks
The BESS Park is a technologically complex structure comprising a variety of high- and medium-voltage equipment (battery packs, inverters, voltage conversion and distribution equipment) and an EMS (Energy Management System) control system.
In addition to the design, the selection of equipment manufacturers and suppliers is underway. “We are trying to select not only the most optimal option, but also the one that will meet all cyber security requirements,” says Marius Šepronas, Project Manager, about the subtleties of the project.
“Challenges are our daily routine”
The implementation of these two contracts will be an extraordinary challenge for the entire Axioma servisas team.
“The biggest challenge of the projects will be the selection of the right energy storage equipment and energy management system and its integration into Litgrid’s network. Today, there are no companies that have all the necessary competences in one hand, so we are looking for partners who will be involved in this creative process together and will strive for maximum results. On the other hand, challenges are our daily routine, and we accept them with pleasure,” says T. Gerdauskas, Head of Vilnius Service Unit.
